The daily habit that’s transforming my business

It’s kinda crazy for a writer, but somewhere along this three-kids-and-a-biz journey I fell out of the habit of daily journaling.

I used to journal fairly regularly back in my corporate days – mostly on the subject of how to find a way out of that world.

But since I became a mum and writing became my day job, the morning journal was just something else to squeeze in before the kids woke up, alongside exercise, meditation, visualization, affirmations and random bits of client work. In other words, it felt like pressure.

This month, all that changed.

On 1 April, I launched my free 10 x 10 Write to the Heart of Your Message sessions – 10 days of 10-minute writing prompts to refine your core message, so you can connect with the clients you love to work with.

It was an idea I’d been mulling over for a while. I always tell my clients that everything you need to know is already within you. The 10 x 10 sessions were a way to draw out that inner vision, simply by committing to 10 minutes of daily reflection and writing from the heart.

Bizarrely, when I created the sessions it didn’t occur to me to that I should join in with the group. It was only when one of the participants was brave enough to post her entire Day 1 reflections in the Facebook group, that I realised I needed to step up too.

That’s when I was reminded of the power of ‘eating your own cat food.’

There is a concept from A Course in Miracles, ‘We teach what we most need to learn’. I know that to be profoundly true for me. And so by journaling alongside my tribe for ten days, I discovered things about myself and my business that surprised and astounded me.

Not only that, but journaling had a direct and tangible impact on my business. Here’s some of what I have gained (so far):

  •  I used my journal reflections as inspiration for social media posts that created fantastic engagement. There were multiple comments of “Thank you, this is what I needed to hear today,” or “I thought you were speaking especially to me”. And that feels pretty darn good.
  • I know what sets me apart on a deeper level – and this has helped me nail a tricky piece of my website copy that has eluded me for many months.
  •  I’ve got a string of blog ideas.
  • I’ve come up with new ideas for packages and ways to serve my clients (watch this space!)

And that’s just the beginning. As a writer, I shouldn’t be surprised, but the power of journaling has truly blown me away. And it’s not just me – others in the group are reporting similar breakthroughs.

I’m now addicted to my daily 10-minute journal session. Sometimes it happens when I get out of bed. Sometimes it’s when I sit down to work. Other times I might do it in the car at school pick up.

It doesn’t really matter. The main thing is that I’ve made a commitment to spending 10 minutes a day reflecting on my life and business. And I can’t wait to see what comes next.
