Six reasons to fall in love with online business

Last week, I spoke at my first live event, an inspiring women’s evening organised by local life coach Sharleen Greer of Midlife Courage.

Sharleen specialises in helping women live their dreams in the second half of their lives. I spoke about the online business model and how any woman can leverage her lifetime of knowledge and experience, to create more freedom and prosperity in her life. For the vast majority of the audience, this was an entirely new concept.

Living rurally as I do, I know that one area women struggle is finding enriching work close by. It’s often a choice between living where they wish to live and finding work that utilises their skills, talents and experience. At the same time, many of my city friends find it hard to juggle the joint demands of a stressful job and busy family life. Turns out a lot of us could do with more flexibility in our working lives and that’s where online business can be a great option – if only more people knew about it and understood it.

I first discovered the world of online business when we lived in San Francisco in the summer of 2013. It took me a while to figure out how it all worked and to understand that using this model, any woman, anywhere, can create a unique and leveragable business, by sharing her strengths, skills and passions with people all over the world. It does take time and it’s not always easy, but if you stay the course, the rewards can be great.

Ever since then I’ve felt crazy passionate about the freedom and flexibility online business offers. Some might say I’ve become a bit evangelical about sharing these ideas with others. So to make life easier – for you and me – I’ve created a free, seven-page guide to Getting Started in Online Business. If you’re curious to understand what this online business thing is all about, or if you’re in business online but you struggle to explain it to others, this guide is for you – and you can download it here.

So here’s a taste of what I discovered when I first began investigating the online business world and why I think it makes such a great model for women – and men – who are longing for more flexibility in their working life:

  1. You can create your own blue-sky business out of what you know and love. Your business might be created out of your professional expertise, like creating lesson plans for school teachers, selling packages of legal services, or social media training. Or, it could be created out of personal passion and interest – like promoting health eating, baby sleep training or a guide to personal styling.
  1. You get to bring yourself and your personality to work – When you work online, your natural personality and quirks become part of your selling point. By showing up as your true self, you will attract the right customers, the ones with whom them you work most naturally. You’ll also put off those who are not a natural fit – this is a good thing!
  1. Social media becomes a tool for generosityForget cute cat pictures and endless inspirational quotes – Facebook is full of business groups where entrepreneurs post their fears and their questions, and others jump in to help out, or share your work with their audience. You also get to build genuine relationships with people from all over the world.
  1. You can leverage your time. Instead of having to sell ten hours of consulting sessions, you can spend ten hours creating a digital product you can sell again and again and again. This could be an ebook, an online training programme, a webinar, templates, workbooks, video classes… on it goes. And it’s not either/or – you can do one-on-one work as well as creating the leveraged income streams. Whatever makes you happy.  🙂
  1. You can be location independent. Have laptop and wifi, will travel. There’s a growing community of digital nomads. Check out Natalie Sisson from Wellington, New Zealand thesuitcaseentrepreneur.com. She’s travelled the world for the last five years, running her business from her laptop.
  1. It’s fun Through my online journey, I’ve made friends all over the world and in August I’ll be going to the ProBlogger conference on the Gold Coast. Next year I plan to get to some of the amazing and inspiring conferences in the US.

Intrigued? I know I was!
