Get noticed – a 5 step process to set yourself apart online

Struggling to get noticed online?

Whether you’re a coach, a copywriter, an engineering firm, a graphic designer, a bookkeeper, an online retailer, a health practitioner, or leading a movement, it’s competitive out there. It’s hard to get heard above all the noise on the internet.

If you want to stand out online, there is one very important question you must ask

What do I want to be known for?

If I looked at your website, your social media, your blogs, your products and services, would I get a clear sense of this? Would I understand what your business is all about and where you are heading? Would I know what’s important to you and how you want to effect change?

Too often, there’s a mismatch between what we want to be known for, and the words we are putting out into the world.

Perhaps you’ve been distracted by shiny object syndrome, offering everything and anything related to your niche. Maybe you’ve taken part in a joint venture that seemed like a good income generator but in reality, distracted you from your core business… or perhaps you’re torn between working in corporate and serving entrepreneurs, so you’re trying to please both but ultimately pleasing no one….

Whatever your story, one thing is clear:

If you feel confused about your core business, so do your customers.

If your offerings are constantly shifting, they won’t know exactly what you do, who you serve or how to tell when they need you – and confused customers don’t purchase.

If you need help standing out online, here’s a simple five step process to get you started:

Step OneGet clear

Take out your journal and spend ten minutes free writing on that all-important question: What do I want to be known for?

Really dig deep and get to the essence of what matters to you. Why do you do what you do? What transformation do you hope to enable? What conversations do you want to lead?

Step Two – Use it as a filter

Take what you want to be known for, and break it down into four or five categories. Brainstorm a list of blog topics or social media posts under each one.

Make a commitment to only create content on topics that align with these four or five categories. Over the next few weeks, observe how your energy and engagement shifts when you are showing up on topics that matter to you.

Step Three – Get feedback

Ask a couple of friends to visit your website and social media accounts, and explain how they understand your business. Choose friends who share similar attributes to your ideal customers and listen to their findings with an open mind.

Step Four

Look critically at your online presence and ask yourself, how can I get closer to what I want to be known for?

  • How do I need to adjust my copy and my message?
  • What can I strip away?
  • What products or services could I drop or add?

You don’t have to do this all at once – striving for the perfect copy can just become another tool for procrastination.  Simply make a clear plan and a timeframe in which these changes will be made – and for the meantime, focus on sharing your streamlined message through your social media.

Step Five – Go Live

The final step is to make a declaration. Go live on Facebook, tell your people what you want to be known for and invite them along for the ride. This is a clear, direct and startlingly simple way to let your people know what you’re all about.

You can even close the video by inviting them to book a consult, or check out your star product, because if your words have truly resonated they will be keen to know more.

The clearer you can get about your message, the easier it will be for you to stand out online, call in the right clients and grow your business.
