Still not launched? This could be why you’re stuck

You know that big project you’ve been working on for months now?

That business you plan to launch, that book you want to write, that course you want to create, that event you’d like to hold, that website you’ve got to get live, that podcast you’re recording….

I know you’ve got every reason why it hasn’t happened yet.

  • You’re overwhelmed by the technology.
  • You’re easily side-tracked. There are so many ‘moving parts’ to this project and it’s hard to know where to focus. Weeks go by and though you’re working hard, you still feel like you’ve made no real progress.
  • You invested in some serious software with capability that far exceeds your needs. Now you’re spending hours and hours trying to figure it out, instead of creating your content.
  • You decided to DIY your web design/ branding/ Facebook ads / copywriting to save money. But you’ve now invested dozens of hours (time you could have spent actually making money) – and you’re still no closer to getting it done.

Meanwhile your launch gets delayed and delayed and delayed… your confidence is growing shaky and you’re starting to wonder if you’re ever going to make any actual money.

Stop right there friend and consider this:

Are you making this project complicated so that you don’t have to do it?

Sometimes the real reason we keep encountering obstacles is not the technology or the complexity of the project.

It’s because some part of us is not fully committed to this course of action.

Deep inside, we feel really uncomfortable with the idea of putting ourselves out there, with committing our thoughts to a book, with speaking on a stage… and so subconsciously, we turn to self-sabotage. Our capacity to focus, prioritise, creatively solve problems or learn something outside our zone of genius, becomes drastically reduced.

Let’s face it:

  • When you can’t get the tech pieces to talk to each other
  • When you spend a couple of days uploading all your contacts and autoresponders to a new email service and then realise it doesn’t actually suit your needs
  • When your Facebook ad keeps getting rejected and you don’t know why
  • When you record a bunch of audio recordings, but then you change the name of the series and you have to go back and record them all again…
  • it’s easy to give up the whole thing as just too damn hard (and therefore, not at all your fault).

Next time you feel that volcanic rumbling of tech rage, and the overwhelming sense that you’re getting nowhere, how about taking a different approach?

Take your “too hard” task and break it down to the simplest possible elements. Then ask yourself how you can make it simpler still:

  • You don’t need a website to launch your business – you can list your services on your business Facebook page, or set up a simple landing page to collect email addresses.
  • When making an offer to your list, you don’t need a fancy lead page or sales page.   All you need is an email + a Paypal button
  • If you’re creating an in-person event, all you need is a Facebook event page + Paypal button.
  • If you’re writing a book about your work, break the topic down into chapters, then break each chapter into a series of ideas. Write about each micro idea, one at a time – you can piece them together later.
  • If you’re struggling with technology, figure out a way to get the help you need. DIY is not a cost-saving when it takes up most of your income-generating time, so figure out where you’re stuck and find someone to help you. Yes you might have to invest – but you can ask about payment plans or even a time trade (not recommended, but helpful when you’re starting out).

There’s almost always a way of getting something done in a simpler fashion. And once you break down that “too hard” barrier, you’ll soon see whether the real problem is the tech, or whether the resistance lies within. If the latter, it’s time to take out your journal and get to the real cause of your resistance.
