Quit resisting your calling! The one word you need to embrace

[dropcaps type=’normal’ font_size=’45’ color=’#2F6587′ background_color=” border_color=”]W[/dropcaps]ith certain clients, there’s one word that brings up a lot of resistance.

And it starts with the letter ‘c’

Coaching.

When these entrepreneurs describe their work, it’s obvious that they are either already coaching, or are called to coach in some way. But one mention of the ‘c word’ and our conversation shudders to a halt.

“I’m not a coach”.

“I couldn’t call myself a coach…”

If that sounds familiar (and feel free to substitute writer, artist or entrepreneur or any other title in place of coach), what is stopping you from putting yourself out there? What would it take for you to feel comfortable using that term?

Pick up your journal and free write around that resistance. Try to find out what lies beneath. Perhaps it’s that you don’t think you:

Are qualified

Have the right experience

Do enough…

to be worthy of using that title.

Maybe deep down you think that to be a real [fill in the blank] you have to:

Struggle for years

        Work for a large corporation

Have a specific job title

Have it all figured out…

Or maybe you’ve got some (fair or unfair) preconceptions about the industry. You don’t want to become just another coach/writer/artist/entrepreneur doing XYZ. There’s hundreds already! The world doesn’t need any more.

I want you to stop right there.

I want you to quit resisting because you think you’re not qualified, or you’re not perfect or good enough, or you haven’t got it all figured out, or because you’re worried about what your clients would think if they saw what it’s really like in your home/office/head/pantry.

I want you to start taking ownership of your natural gifts.

Some people are natural coaches and teachers, just as some are natural artists, or natural writers – and no piece of paper is going to change that. Sure, you can learn new and incredibly valuable skills, but a degree or a diploma doesn’t make you who you are.

What would happen if you stopped denying and starting leaning into your gifts?

If you gave yourself permission to explore and play, to watch with curiosity and follow where they lead you? Noticed what doors open up, recognised how you can help your clients in a deeper, richer, more meaningful sense, when you follow your intuition.

I’m a firm believer that (as it says in A Course in Miracles) we teach what we need to learn. If you’re imperfect and you haven’t got it all figured out, then to my mind, you’re a far more relatable leader and teacher.   Your clients know you ‘get it’ and that makes what you’ve done seem so much more achievable.

If you are resisting taking a new direction in your business, or taking on a new professional title, try giving yourself permission to experiment. See what happens when you allow yourself to flow with your natural gifts. Then come back here and let me know what you discover.
