Struggling to set yourself apart? Time to find your core message

Stuggling to set yourself apart - time to find your core message

Do you ever struggle to explain what you do?

You know your work creates awesome – perhaps even life changing – results.

But communicating that to your ideal clients? Ugggh. Your words feel so boring and waffly. You can’t seem to get across the power and the magic in what you have to offer.

The trouble is not that you can’t write – it’s that you’re not clear on your core message.

Your core message is the central concept at the heart of your work. It’s the big idea that lights you up and underpins everything that you do

But it’s not just what you do – it’s how you do it. Your core message captures the unique way that you deliver value and create a positive impact in your clients’ lives or work. It sets you apart and resonates with the people you are here to serve.

When you don’t know your core message….

Showing up online can be a struggle. You just don’t know what to write about or what to post on social media, so you lack focus and waste a lot of time.

You don’t know how to explain your work with power and impact – and if YOU can’t explain it, how are your ideal clients supposed to get it?

Your website copy is flat and a bit lacklustre. You may have even tried to instruct a copywriter and ended up frustrated when they simply didn’t get it either. You feel like you’re just saying the same old things as everyone else in your industry.

You go round and round in circles, wondering when you’re ever going to gain traction in your business. It feels like everyone else in your field has it together while you’re still floundering. Yep, you may have a bad case of comparisonitis.

When you know your core message:

Setting yourself apart is simple and easy. You know your point of difference. You see the value you have to offer and you know how to communicate it.

Your core message informs your packages, your products, your services and most of all, a lead magnet that will catch your ideal client’s attention.

Your core message becomes the foundation piece of your content strategy. When you know your core message, you can start to flesh out content themes, blogs/vlogs/podcast topics and social media content.

It also helps you decide what opportunities to pursue and who you should collaborate with. And it helps you filter out opportunities that may be flattering, but aren’t going to take you where you really want to go.

So how do you get clear on your core message?

Take a deep breath – everything you need is already within you but you may need to do a little soul searching. You need to look at what you do, how you really help your clients, and what you really want them to know.

I’ve put the whole process together in my free Write to the Heart of Your Message workbook. Print it out and go somewhere beautiful and quiet, where you can reflect.

Some of the questions will challenge you, but I encourage you to stick with it. Your core message is the foundation of everything you create in your business, so it’s worth investing some time to get it right.
