JUST WRITE

Make 2023 the year you FINALLY write that Non-Fiction book

It’s said that 80% of people want to write a book ‘someday’.

The truth is most people will never get around to it.

Whether you don’t know where to start, lack confidence in your writing or find the scale of a book project overwhelming, it’s easy to find a reason to delay that dream for another day – or another year.

That’s why we’ve created Just Write: Make 2023 the Year of Your Book.

It’s an in-person writing course designed to help you take your non-fiction book from initial idea to a draft manuscript in 2023 with all the support you need.

The course covers everything from defining a compelling book idea, to telling an engaging story, writing vivid scenes, research techniques, book design and preparing a manuscript for publication. You’ll set monthly writing or word-count goals, with Zoom check-ins for accountability and feedback on your work.

Meet the Tutors

Just Write was created by non-fiction authors Maria Gill and Christine Sheehy
Maria and Christine

Maria is a full-time writer, the author of more than 60 books and chair of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Society of Authors. She has a Masters in Creative Writing and teaches writing skills to children and adults around the country.

Christine is a bestselling author, non-fiction book coach, and a ghost-writer, best known locally for her work as story editor on The Village Table.

How does it work?

Just Write includes:

  • 10 x Saturday morning group workshops, held in Warkworth, just 40 minutes north of Auckland. Each workshop includes teaching time and focused writing exercises that will get you making headway into your book from day 1. You’ll also set monthly writing or word-count goals, so you can track your progress towards your dream.
  • 9 x Zoom small group support sessions. This is your chance to seek feedback on your work, get support in busting your personal writing blocks and be held accountable to your writing goals. You’ll be part of a smaller group of writers, supported by either Maria or Christine depending on your book topic and genre. These sessions are held on a Wednesday evening, mid-way between workshops. You’ll get the best results if you show up live, but if you have to miss a session, you can submit questions in advance and the session will be recorded.
  • Session times – Saturdays 9.30 to 12pm,  Wednesday calls – 7.30 to 830pm.

faq’s

Just Write is suitable for any kind of non-fiction book. It’s for people who have longed to write their memoir, as well as those who want to share their knowledge and perspective on a specific topic. It could be professional knowledge, self-help, or a “how to” instructional book on a hobby like gardening or cooking.

To get the most out of this course students are expected to:

  • Show up to the monthly workshops and Zoom calls
  • Prioritise writing time each week, so you can meet your monthly goals. (We will cover this in workshop 1.)
  • Each month, provide feedback on at least two other students’ work, both in the workshops and in between sessions on the shared Google Drive.

There are a maximum of 12 places available for Just Write 2023. Zoom check-ins will be in small groups of approximately six writers, facilitated by either Christine or Maria.

We only want you to do this course if you are fully committed to your book. If you are unsure if this course is right for you, please click here to book a call with Christine or Maria prior to signing up.

As this is a small group course, we only have places for a small number of students and we  need certainty in order for the course to proceed.  For this reason, your first payment of $799 is non-refundable.  Once the course has started, no refunds will be provided and the full course fee will be payable regardless of whether you complete the course.

This course is for non-fiction books only.

You will get the most out of this workshop if you can attend every session. If you can’t make a Saturday workshop, we will share any teaching materials, such as Powerpoint presentation (if any) or worksheets (if any) with you after the workshop.

Zoom sessions can be recorded and you can submit questions in advance.

No discounts will be offered for missed sessions.

Unfortunately, the creative path doesn’t come with guarantees. There are many factors why a particular manuscript might or might not get picked up by a publishing house. It could be the market, the timing, other books on the publisher’s catalogue or book sale trends.

This course is designed to support you in completing a draft manuscript written in 2023. Our final workshop will focus on preparing your work for publication and will look at both pitching your work to traditional publishing houses and self-publishing options. It will be up to each student to decide how to proceed from there. After completing the course, you may need to do additional work on the manuscript, or seek the support of a professional editor and/or proofreader, before you are ready to look at publication.

While we cannot offer any assurances about whether your work will be ready for or accepted for publication by the end of this course, there are many, many benefits to writing a book. Regardless of whether or how you decide to publish your book, you will grow as a writer (and dare we say it, as a person) by completing your first manuscript with Just Write.
