Changing direction? Here’s how to announce it (+ a free script)

Are you changing direction or about to pivot in your business?

Maybe you’re offering a new service, or letting go of an old one.

Maybe you’re starting to charge money for something which has up until now, been a passion project.

Perhaps your ideal customer has changed?

Almost every entrepreneur experiences a pivot or two, particularly in the first few years. It’s part of the natural journey of growth and expansion, of finding and settling into the work you are meant to do.

But when it comes to declaring this new direction, sometimes entrepreneurs can get a little nervous.

I’m often asked ‘How do I tell my people I’m changing direction?’

The answer I give is ‘Just tell them’.

Write a blog, shoot a video, or send a newsletter to your peeps, explaining what you are doing, why you’re changing direction, and – this is the important bit – inviting them to work with you, in your new capacity.

Sounds simple, right? That’s because it is.

All you have to do is declare it.

Sure, you might lose a few followers, if they are not aligned with your new and improved mission. A little house cleaning can be a good thing as it ensures your tribe of followers continues to feature today’s ideal customers – not yesterday’s. And once you go public, chances are you’ll gain a few new followers too.

If something is holding you back from announcing your new direction, I encourage you to stop and consider why.

Are your customers really going to rebel in their droves?

Or could it be that the person who most needs convincing about this pivot, is actually YOU?

Sometimes we project our own fears onto our customers, so that we don’t have to take steps towards what scares us.

Maybe this new direction doesn’t fit with the identity you’ve forged for yourself, or the way you think other people see you. Maybe you’re trying to squash yourself into a box, to wrap a neat label around your work. Or maybe there’s a little part of you that feels somehow unworthy, wondering “who am I?” to do this work, to step up on this scale.

If you want to find out what’s really at the heart of your objections, pick up your journal and free write for ten minutes on the following questions:

  • What troubles you about committing to and declaring the change?
  • What’s the worst that can happen?
  • What’s the best that can happen?
  • Who is it that you really need to convince – and why?

You might be surprised by what you discover.
